WHO I AM.
Vaughn David
I was raised from an early age in Coquitlam British Columbia; I also lived on or near the coastal waters. I am a self-taught West Coast sculptor with more than thirty-five years of experience working with wood in all its manifestations.
To create my free-form sculptures, I have searched local beaches, tree removal, and local forests. What I always seek is shapes with potential for dynamic form, shape, and grain. Concurrently I studied all characteristics of raw natural wood, I continue to learn the ways of the wood, the shaping, hand sanding, and hand oiling.
I have dedicated the last 10 years cultivating all manner of evocative wood shapes. My first step is to remove all bark, dirt, and rot. This first step varies in time due to the complexity and size. The first 2 years were devoted to the acquisition of pieces that grew in complexity i.e. from simple slab-odalisque shapes to dynamic three-dimensional sculptures.
I have learned the dedication required for relentless manual work, the shaping, sanding, and oiling. The working to completion of a piece can take years. At any one time, I have a dozen or so pieces on the go. Therefore the last 10 years have been devoted to the making of my pieces.
My work is different from traditional carving, it’s found shapes that are refined by shaping to enhance the spirituality of the wood, but respecting the integrity of the original shape. When I open my sealed aging room I am welcomed by ninety spirits that I consider friends.
MY HISTORY.
Welcome to my world, a rebirth of ancient Metis wood sculpture.
My business is obtaining, drying, and creating natural, unique, freeform wood sculptures and artistic wood furnishings. I personally design, create, and sculpt each wood piece. My business will be to expose, market, and sell my work, to display my work in selective places.
My industry is creating wood sculptures and functional objects of art. Due to massive growth of domestic and corporate/business spaces there is an ever more expanding market for high-end works of sculpture art. Through increased exposure in our market, my work would develop an international clientele.
The strength of my company is twofold. My vast experience working with wood for all purposes. My indigenous heritage amplifying all natural things, coupled with my collection of finished work, semi finished pieces, and extensive stock of specialty woods.
The target market will be lavish homes, boutique hotels, boardrooms, corporate offices, lobby’s, high-end home decorators, home designers and more.

Bringing out a great potential of nature to the living evironment
My life spent working with wood has now led me to recognize and artistically sculpt wood into original art. The intrinsic beauty of the wood, the unique shapes, and the color and grain changes are what sets my work apart. These sculptures are meant to evolve with age, continuing to live.
I will market my ever growing collection, from functional slab and odalisques to purely figurative works of woodart. To expand my business to include a sculpture studio and workshop where I can expose my work to the public and an opportunity to mentor several young students.
Through life long exposure to the use of wood I am naturally compelled to seek out unique wood from the West Coast beaches and forests. To me all steps are equally important, beginning with obtaining the raw wood, to critically air drying, to rough shaping, to realizing the essential shape, to repeated sanding and oiling that reveals the essence. To simplify my life to become one with the spirit of the wood.
